something to think about: "While running, it is rude to count the people you pass out loud." - adidas

Today, on this Superbowl Sunday, I ran the Huntington beach Surf City half marathon here in California. The marathon was run along the beach in long straight ways that seemed endless at times. Okay, so lets start from the beginning shall we? I ended up getting out of work last night at around 130am ( er... this morning I should say). After a long busy night I headed straight to Huntington Beach from Rancho Cucamonga were I work. The total trip was a little under an hour. I had packed up earlier before going to work and had everything I thought I would need in my trunk. I ended up getting to my friend Ricky's house at around 230am, parked at along the side in a commercial area and tried to get some sleep. I had already told them that I would head over there but would not call them to wake them up so early in the morning, so I did just that. I didn't end up falling asleep until, I would say about 3am or so. When I did woke up it was 515am. During those few hours of sleep I kept on waking up with the slightest noises. I did notice a lot of late party goers coming back home from having a good time. At one point one of the guys noticed I was asleep in the car and just whispered something to his friend. Reminiscing back, I did also end up sleeping in my car last year the night before the LA marathon, but that's a different story for some other time.
Let me just tell you that the car is probably not the smartest idea to use as a hotel, especially the night before a big race. I mean, I truly enjoy my car and all but its just too compact and you end up not relaxing your body, which is exactly what you need before a race. The point that I wanna make is that I truly enjoy running and i will do whatever it takes to do just that. Sometimes the sacrifices that you make to do the things that you truly enjoy are painful and at times not logical, but you gotta do what it takes to be truly happy right? Anything that causes no harm others of course. Continuing on, so Ruth, My friends wife calls me at about 520am and asks me to come up. I go into the apt, use the restroom and change into my running gear.
My friend Ricky was originally supposed to run also but he ended up injuring his knee a few weeks ago...bummer. Ruth was scheduled to run and ended up doing so. When we got there, Ruth had to go start her race, the full marathon...woot woot Way to go Ruth!!! I had about an hour to find parking before my race was to start at 745am. After the usual ceremonies the race was in full swing. Off we went on this fresh but very nice Sunday morning. I was pacing myself at 7 minute miles since I wanted to finish in at around an hour and a half. I was only doing this as a workout for the LA Marathon in May, 2009, so I took it as such. When I get in that mindset I don't really get anxious before the race. Now if its real race, that's a whole different story; from runners nerves, to stomach problems at times. During the race I felt great. I was running with some guys I met at the beginning, but then I had to go when I realized that at their pace I would clock in at just under 2 hours. I can say that this was the best race where I have felt strong in the last three miles. To the point where I was actually sprinting to try and recuperate from the time lost pacing off other people initially. In the end I clocked in at 1h and 32 min 44seconds. Totally stocked about my time considering my initial pace.

A nice highlight of the whole race was when after crossing the finish line this guy comes jogging towards me with a big smile and asks if I remember him. I did the second I saw him. It was Kevin, a running buddy I had when I went to UCSD back almost 4 years ago. This was guy was way cool back then and continues to be. Its nice to see people like Kevin that as the years go on they still do what they enjoy best, run!!! I gave him my contact info. in hopes that we can meet up to catch up or race sometime. As it turns out he beat me by about 20 seconds... Next time you are going down Kevin...hahaha.

Above i have posted pictures of the medals we received, which are amazingly cool. Its a medal with a surf board ( hens the marathon name.... Surf City!!!)Great job to Ruth on running the full marathon. I will have to get back to her and find out how it all went for her. Also, Rick for the support and for letting me stay in the front area of his condo. Today exciting day indeed... I gotta get ready for work now. I close again, on less than two hours of sleep, and having run a half marathon....Here at Salmiler we are living our lifestyle... on the run, R U?
