9 days until the Big Day!!!
miles run: 7 mile run....................................dirt/ashpalt.................................sunny/warm
fuel for thought: "The will to win is worthless, without the will to prepare." -Unknown
Calling all runners and running fans:
Its another early morning for me today. I was originally supposed to close this afternoon but you know, things happen and plans change...for me, however, every change is another opportunity. This afternoon I will do the run I originally had planned for tomorrow, which in turn, will allow me to be off tomorrow. With just 9 days to go until the Los Angeles Marathon, things are finally quickly winding down to the very end. Its making me anxious just thinking about the Big Day. This week coming up will find me loading up on complex carbs and electrolyte supplements to refuel for the big day. Other years I have been less informed, thinking it only mattered what you ate the day before the race. Now however, the more you read and learn you come to find out that its up to a week that you have to nutritionally plan ahead for that big day. You will be thankful you did when your back up fuel starts depleting fast past the 13 mile mark. For this purpose, I headed out to Trader Joe's and got myself a bunch of awesome food. Last night I had an amazing delicious Spicy Thai Pasta Salad with White Chicken Breast and a portion of Almonds right after my 7 mile run and exercise routine. Of course all complemented with a tall bottle of Glaceau's Smart water filled with awesome to goodness thirst quenching fun and electrolytes. I can't wait to see what's for dinner this afternoon. Trader Joe's Rocks my pants....living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

13 days left until LA
miles run: 7 mile easy, easy run........dirt.........asphalt
fuel for thought: "It is a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness." -Seneca
Calling all runners and running fans:
With just 13 days left until the LA Marathon, I have been getting everything ready to head out to LA a few days before the big event and attend the pre marathon festivities, expo, and load up on carbs for the Big Race. I shall be heading out Saturday the 23rd, to run Monday and return Monday night....more details in the upcoming days.
On this blog entry I wanted to stress the importance a warm up and warm down ( cool down). A few entries ago I showed a video that stressed the importance of a warm up and which also had some tips of exercises to engage in to stretch and loosen up the muscles before a running exercise. Today, however, the emphasis will be on the cool down. For me personally, I can say that full on body cool downs have allowed me to maintain injury free for about 4 years. If you read some of the major running books, they stress the importance of a warm down, and some even point that without it, can lead to a decline in fitness level as well as injury do to the fact that you are not allowing your body to come to term with the cycle of workout before rest mode ( you down just go from gear 6 to a parking position in your mannual vehicle, do you?). The following is a video I obtained from the LA marathon website where Rod Dixon ( Bronze medalist, Olympics 1972 1500m) shows you great ways to stretch for an optimal cool down. Watch and apply to your running routine.....living our lifestyle on the run, R U?

Got RECOVERY
miles run: 8 mile slow recovery.........dirt.......................................hot hot hot!!!
fuel for thought: "Man was not made for mere human accomplishment. He was made to reach for the impossible and watch God make it possible." -Obtained from Sara Hall's facebook entry.
Calling all runners and running fans:
Today was a slow RECOVERY run from yesterdays last tempo run before LA. Pretty much my training is done for the La Marathon in approximately 18 days. What's done is done. Now its just a matter of running enough to maintain my fitness level up and start preparing mentally. The LA marathon is a physical as well as a mental game. The first part is done, now the second...well, I'm still working on it :)
Also, for all of those running fans out there of the great Ryan and Sara Hall, check out their official website for inspiration, running tips, and updates on their lives on the run. Great stuff they got going there!!!
The video below is an interesting one because of the no so obvious fact when training for a marathon or any other endurance race for that matter. People tend to think that your success of a given race has everything to do with the hard workouts that you put your body through during training. The point of this video is to highlight the importance of a recovery and how its equally as important as the hard training. Check it out and apply to your running. Perhaps here is the reason why you are not getting any faster...lol.....living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

miles run: 7 mile recover................................asphalt............................cold/dark
something to think about: " Do or not do, there is no try" -Yoda
Calling all runners and running fans:
Today I went on an easy 7 mile run to recover from yesterdays 20 mile aggressive run. What made it extra challenging was the fact that I had work right after....Let me just tell you that I didn't go to sleep until 330am. Luckily yesterday's run will have been the last tough run before the Marathon in three weeks.
By the way I just got my 3G 16GB iphone yesterday and I couldn't be more stoked....Now I can check my email on the go...and I will be able to find myself when I get lost...:).....living the lifestyle on the run, R U?

Zero Sleep tonight..Bon qui qui
miles run: Sunday morning....9 mile run......dirt.................sunny
fuel for thought: "It hurts up to a point and then it doesn't get any worse." -Ann Trason
Calling all runners and running fans:
Its 3:30 am on Monday morning and I have had exactly 0 hours of sleep tonight. I ended up switching shifts with another manager this weekend to all closing, except for Monday, which ended up messing with my sleep. For me, sleep needs to be worthwhile. My sleep length needs to be at least 6 hours, no less. Given that i got out from work at 12am and come back to open at 6am, I would only end up getting 3 hours of sleep, after drive time, and pre and post prep time. I can't dare tease my body like that. Instead, I have just spent the last few hours updating the Salmiler page, and looking over future products for the apparel line. You can expect me to come home Monday afternoon and crash until the next day. Only to realize that I have a 20 mile run ahead that very morning....the sacrifice one is willing to do to follow the dream...thank god I only have myself to think about for now :)
On this sleepless night, I also had a bit of time to watch this crazy video that makes me laugh hysterically, every time I watch it. It was first introduced to me by my brother, Elio, on his myspace site. Its the famous, Anjelah Johnson as, Bon qui qui at King Burger... "where you can have it your way, but don't get crazy!!! LMAO...Check it out and enjoy ;) living our lifestyle on the run, R U?

Outstanding Performance Ryan and Kara
miles run: 12 mile run....................dirt/asphalt....................................sunny/perfect
fuel for thought: "If a man coaches himself, then he has only himself to blame when he is beaten." - Sir Roger Bannister
Calling all runners and running fans:
Today I went out for a 12 mile run. The weather was perfect( sunny yet just a bit windy) and I felt physically and mentally great. What more can you ask for, right? With exactly one month to go ( or exactly four weeks and 1 day) until the LA Marathon, I've hit the peak and now I start cutting back my mileage this week coming up. This next Tuesday, however, I have my last 20 miler before the race. At this point the bulk of my training is done and I just need to make sure that I am gearing up mentally for the race.....I can already feel the birth of baby butterflies in my stomach....:)
A big round of applause for Kara Goucher and Ryan Hall for their outstanding performance at this year's 2009 Boston Marathon, held Monday May 20. They both obtained the 3rd place finish in their respective divisions. Great way to REPRESENT Ryan and Kara.....there will be plenty of races ahead to win that First place :) The following is a video of the 2009 Boston Marathon Men's and Women's race finish....Check it out and get inspired!!!...living our lifestyle on the run, R U?

miles run: day off from running today....
<31> more days until LA....woot woot!!!
fuel for thought: "The pride you gain is worth the pain. " - Dennis Ogilvie
Calling all runners and running fans:
It doesn't get more chill then today. This day was truly relaxing for a change. I didn't run today. Instead, the only productive thing that I did was take my car in for a scheduled service....feels great not to have to spend cash for car service...BMW takes care of it all for me :). Well, not for long though...only until the50k mile mark. Soon, before the 40k mark, I will have to decide if I want to extend warranty past the 50k mile mark or bite the bullet and spend as I go...
Moving right along, the content on this blog will soon be gone like the wind, forever. The good news is that in 2 weeks Salmiler will have a permanent home in the form of a professional website, as mentioned before.
Also, I great shout out to Steve Martin , who I recently found on facebook after 7 years. Steve was this awesome, human being runner from UCSD ( 2002 alumni) that showed myself and the other freshmen runners the way while running. I will always be grateful to Steve and the rest of the guys on that TEAM for making my experience at UCSD a memorable one. Its also great to hear that many of the guys are still running...stoked!!!
Surfing the net I found this great video that reminds me of the friendly tag-you-are- it dirty games that occur while running :) Check it out and enjoy...living our lifestyle on the run, R U?

I guess it okay given that the marathon will be in late May, when I am sure will be even hotter and this run only helps me get used to the heat, right?
With 35 days left until the Marathon, here is a 6 minute video tour of the 2009 LA Marathon to be held Monday, May 25, 2009 at 7:20am. School Running Club....
fuel for thought: " A run begins the moment that you forget you are running." -Adidas (from Abby's wall)
Calling all runners and running fans:
Today I start my day at 4am. I work the early shift which starts at 630. Why am up so early you may ask? Well, I just like to get up extra early to catch up on certain things like this blog I am updating on. After work I will run a 9 miler. Yesterday I had the opportunity to substit
ute teach for a good running friend of mine, Abby. I met Abby about two years ago at a school here in Riverside. Abby is from Michigan, where I believe she was born, grew up and went to college. Now she teaches English and runs regularly here in California. What's great about her is that she is in charge of the running club at her school, which is a middle school around here. How cool is that...these kids are getting an early start on their running. I remember not being able to start running regularly until high school, how sad!!! Back in the days they never had programs like this earlier on in a child's curriculum. I am sure some of these kids will have an advantage when going on to high school and college and decide to run competitively....lucky!!! Its great to see people like Abby doing their part in sharing their passion for this running lifestyle. The club meets early in the morning before school and runs a few miles regularly. They also compete at local running events on weekends. Oh and almost forgot to mention, last November, Abby ran here first marathon in North Carolina with here sister...woot woot!! :) She says she had a great experience and felt better than she thought she would. :) Keep up the good running Abby and keep sharing running lifestyle/spirit...living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

Calling all runners and running fans:
Today I decided to sleep in and do nothing.....Nothing as far as running, and exercising that is. Yesterday I ran a 21 mile run before I went in for work so today's rest day was well deserved. With only 39 days left until the LA marathon, my mileage is dwindling down from the peak of 23 miles in one day two weeks ago. After I managed to get out of the house, I went and got my car cleaned and headed out for lunch with a friend. We ended up at Panda Express, where I had the orange chix over white rice. Not the healthiest food, but you gotta give me credit for the steam rice alternative, right? :)
I am happy to report that I will soon have a new home in the form of a new website to showcase the salmiler lifestyle and apparel co. The new site will be more professionally done and will represent salmiler to its fullest. I just hope you all are as excited as we are here at salmiler. New Promotional Button Design
miles run: 10 mile medium long run......................dirt/asphalt....................sunny/windy
As for the Salmiler lifestyle and apparel company, I now have a new promotional button design ( See photos). I had my designer work up a one that I think works well. Its simple, and to the point of promoting the lifestyle and the website. I had my sister, Liz, make a few hundred buttons this week. Due to spring break it was prefect timing. Its nice having younger siblings that in turn have other friends that always find button making a fun activity :).....living our lifestyle on the run, R U?

Its 4:47 am on a Friday morning and here goes the start of my day. Today I open the early morning ship which usually starts at 6:30pm. As mentioned earlier that I would, I ended up taking my sister out for a run on Wed. We ran a 6 mile where she proved she can run. At the end of the run I had her sprint as hard as she could to test her strength and let me tell you, she blew me way. That girl can run. I can't wait to see what she accomplishes when she goes to high school :) Yesterday I had a scheduled tempo run but instead ended up running a medium long run. Today after work, I shall be running a tempo run to make up for yesterday. With only 50 days left until the LA marathon, my hard work outs are now limited....

I worked this morning at the restaurant and decided to take the day off from running. Instead, however, somebody else ran and won a wonderful race. It was my younger sister, Elizabeth, that has taken on the running lifestyle and has proven to be successful thus far. A few weeks ago she ran a track meet and won the events that she was in. Today, however, she ran in the Middle School Distance Mile and won the girls race with a time of 5:45. I am very proud of her and I can't wait to see what will come when she goes on and runs cross country and track in high school :)....living our lifestyle on the run, R U?

Relaxed day
miles run: 8 mile run...................dirt/asphalt.........................sunny
fuel for thought: "Do a little more each day than you think you possibly can." -Lowell Thomas
Calling all runners and running fans:
After yesterday's three hour run it was time to run a relaxed, easy run. Today I ran an 8 mile run along the trails of Victoria. The weather was perfect and so was my attitude. Even though running is my passion, there is times when you are just not feeling it. Today, however, I knew I had conquered my longest run during this training yet, this easy 8 mile would be nothing in comparison. After my run I at a huge bowl of strawberries and cereal with soy milk. Berry fruit is great after hard workouts because they have ant oxidants which help replenish muscles. After my run, I met up with my friend Chris at Starbucks for a catch up. Chris is a good friend of mine that attends UCR where he is getting his PhD in Psychology. After hanging out with Chris, I was off to the dentist for cavity fillings. I ended up getting 3 cavities filled in a fairly quick and painless session. I shall be returning soon to get 4 more. It had been three years since my last visit. I am just glad I didn't have any major issues :)
On a side note, recently I got myself a new pair of shoes. I figure that I have about 7 weeks to go before the LA marathon and that should be sufficient time to break in the pair before the bid day. I went for a pair of mainly white, and blue, 401 New Balance. After having worn them a few times now, I can say that they are very comfortable and lightweight. The only downside is the white color; which ,as you can see is no longer truly white :( ....living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

<53> more days until the LA marathon...woot woot :)
calling all runners and running fans:
Its been a few days since an update so here it goes. Today I ran a 22 mile run. It is probably the most I will have run before the LA marathon on May 25th.....I have two more weeks of high mileage before I start cutting back. On a side note, I think I now know what an overdose feels like, as I believe I might have overdosed on Vitamin C. I ate 6 huge oranges during my run this morning and started feeling weird. I started to feel hot and cold at the same time minutes before my run was over.....Any medical experts out there know what was happening to me? Its been a few hours now and I think the effects are gone. Currently feeling accomplished and relaxed as I post this blog. Its such a great feeling to finish the longest run you will do prior to a marathon...Its like you have conquered the highest peak...all other peaks will be similar, but not higher :).
Today on Yahoo news, I read a news story about a stupid mistake made by the admissions staff at UC San Diego, in La Jolla, Ca. ( UCSD), the school I attended and graduated from in 2005. First of all, I want to say that I am embarrassed and angry for victims that were taken on this emotional roller coaster ride. As it turns out, the school had sent out its acceptance letters to about 35% of all applicants back a few weeks ago, along with the rejection letter to the remaining 65%, pretty standard right? Well, the problem came just a few hours ago when the admissions office sent out an acceptance email to all 100% of the students welcoming them to the school and congratulating them on their acceptance. A half an hour later, another email was sent to those 65% ( rejected ) apologizing and letting them know that it had all been a mistake. Could it have been an intentional April fools joke or a mere coincidence? That's for you all to judge. I think, however, that UCSD's highest officials have some explaining to do. And to think that I regarded this "great school" as having some of the most professional staff members I had ever enountered....PATHETIC............living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

Change in Routine

miles run: will be running an 8 miler recover run this afternoon..............dirt.......sunny?
something to think about: "The long run puts the tiger in the cat."- Bill Squires, coach
calling all runners and running fans:
Today I am starting my day early....4:00am early. I work at the restaurant breakfast and lunch as opposed to the usual dinner shirt. Its a change and although I usually prefer to close so that I can run in the morning and sub, once in a while its good to change things up a little, right? With daylight saving so early this year its been nice to be able to run in the evenings also. Yesterday I went out for a 12 mile medium long run right before my doctor's appointment. It was a good run except for the fact that I had my physical results coming up right after so I was a bit nervious. I did a full on check up a few weeks ago ( needles, urine etc...) and finally got the results back yesterday. I hadn't done a check up in years and it was time. Luckily, I had nothing to fear...I was cleared....The doctor even said that I was too healthy....is that even possible? lol. And I was thinking the worst...why are we so pessimistic?
Anyhow, so today I will be running right after work. Then I am heading out to PF Changs for some orange chicken with brown rice.... I truly enjoy my Asian cuisine with brown rice. Many might argue that PF Chang's is "Americanized" Chinese food, but to me, its all I know and it is perfectly fine :). Last night I had House Chicken from Pick up Stix which was amazing also. Might I add that I ended up eating my friends leftovers...can we say oink?lol... The images above and below were taken by my brother, Elio, of me at the Four Seasons in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago. This place was amazing, I would definitely consider s staying here in the future....if I was rich.....lol :)......Living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

Just<57>more days until the LA Marathon :)
Calling all runners and running fans:
Today I took the day off from running to go and sub for half a day. ( One day off up one more to go) I subbed for a very well behaved group of students at this school by right by my house. Its always pleasant to have such good experiences. It almost makes me want to teach more in these lower grades....NOT...Everyone has a preference and I tend to appreciate the older kids a little more. Its been a few days since my last post but that doesn't mean that I haven't put in my miles cause I have. On Saturday I did a very intense hill workout for about one hour in preparation for those hills on the LA Marathon. A marathon is longer distance and sure the hills are not as steep but when you are eighteen miles into the run, even the slightest incline can make you feel the pain. I did about 6 1/4 uphill repeats and relaxed on the way down. I could tell I was working hard for I was completely drenched in sweat as I jogged back to the samilermobile ( my car). On Sunday, on the other hand, I went out for a nice and relaxed run to ease the pain from the previous day's workout. Yesterday, Monday, I did a medium long run which felt great even though it was a very, very, VERY, WINDY!!! ( did you get the point? :)) It helped that it was very sunny and bright, which made it not as cold as other windy days. Okay well I guess that was a quick recap of the last few days. I will get going now, I work at the restaurant this afternoon and I have to start getting ready. The good thing is that its my Friday and I couldn't be more stoked... woot, WOOT!!!......living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

I decide to take a job that allows me the time to do some writing and thinking thoroughly. Why not get paid to think and write don't you think? :) I have truly enjoyed these last few days off on vacation. I can't wait until my next vacation sometime in July or August...Sweet!!!!. Yesterday I ran an easy 8 miler run to loosen up after my 20 miler Wednesday. I tried to run on a different trail over on the border of Norco and Riverside but was bummed out to find that it costs 4 bucks per visit ( they even charge 2 dollars per dog, What!!!!). I guess the tough budget cuts have affected even the parks and recreations dept. Can you imagine, if I run 5 or 6 days a week X $4 thats 20-24 bucks a week!!!?? Even more if I decide to take Charly along...... maybe not!!!
Totally Stoked, just 61 Days until the Los Angeles Marathon..Woot woot......more details of my arrangements and plans for this upcoming event.....Living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

Calling all runners and running fans:
As some of you may know, I am still on vacation and have been enjoying every second of it. Today I slept in until 9am, woke up and went out to get my car washed. Now I know that in order to beat the crowds, the time to go is in the morning. I was in and out in about 35 minutes, and usually it takes me over an hour. After my car wash, I came home and started doing some reading. People may ask where does Sal get his inspiration/motivation to do the things that come to mind? Well, good thing you asked. I usually like to read about people that are successful and can offer me the knowledge to learn from. I enjoy reading others' experiences and adventures; successful and not so, the point is that I have something to learn. Recently I was introduced to Mixergy.com, which is an online blog that conducts interviews and focuses on creating inspiration for entrepreneurs by focusing on successful ones that have made it happen and their stories. This blog is run by its founder, a very successful entrepreneur himself, Andrew Warner, who I have found to be a very passionate, humble and carrying individual thus far. Today I had the wonderful opportunity to listen to the interview with Brian Johnson, an entrepreneur that has successfully launched three companies, his latest one being Philosopher's Notes ( similar but better than cliff notes) . I would have to say that it was a truly inspiring and mesmerizing experience and everyone reading this blog owe it to themselves to go and check out this interview with Brian Johnson or any other on Mixergy.com
After the productive knowledge intake at Mixergy.com, I decided to go out for a very long run, a 20 miler to be precise. I started my run at around 330pm. The weather was hot and sunny but with a nice cool breeze which made it perfect. I did my run on Victoria St. towards Downtown Riverside and occasionally made some turns into open fields in both directions. One of the truly great things about running here in Riverside is the deliciously juicy oranges that are so conveniently dangling along the side of the trails. Today I have to admit I had a total of 5 oranges~ CAN WE SAY VITAMIN C OVERDOSE? lol. I finished my run and headed home to a nice hefty plate of garlic chicken over brown rice....yum. The run took me a total of 2 hours and 35 minutes. As i am blogging this I am eating ginger candy and drinking lots and lots of refreshing water.....living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

Today I slept in after having had a blast this weekend in Las Vegas. When I got up I decided to to out for a 10 mile run. After my run I went for my scheduled dentist appointment for a regular check up. I was ticked to find out that I had a few cavities that will need to be filled in the upcoming weeks. Then I went out for dinner with my good friend of mine, Susan. This friend of has been a great friend to myself and Charly, my dog. She has given me great dog advice that has ultimately made me a better parent to Charly :) Thanks Suzie.
Below are some pictures of my sister, brother and a friend, Kalil that went with me to Las Vegas. This was truly a great experience for all of us. I was thrilled to see my sister and brother having a good time, given that they had never been before. Kalil and I had been there before, but were thrilled of being there again. Just to let you know, while there we got to visit every major hotel and casino on the strip. This only meant one thing....LOTS and LOTS of WALKING !!! Enjoy the photos...
This was our view from the window of our condo at Club 36 Timeshare

Awesome waterfall at the Palazzo.
And still my favorite...the Cesar palace.
At the Venetian overlooking the gondolas.

Calling all runners and running fans,
Today I woke up stoked about daylight savings. Now I will be able to get some of my runs in after work too. It was such a burden to have to run so early before work in order to get my runs in. I dislike running in the dark for safety reasons ( yeah i know you guys probably are like... what a wuss but hey....I'm okay with that :) so the daylight savings is perfect. This morning I went out for an 8 mile recovery after this weekend's hard hill work out. At this point I am in full swing with only two months left until the LA marathon.
I am also stoked because just three days and I will be on vacation...woot woot. Vacations are awesome, especially when they are paid...haha. Vegas here we come. My siblings, some friends and I will be heading to Vegas on Friday, March 13 . It should an awesome experience.....

"Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win."
- Tom Fleming's Boston Marathon training sign on his wall
Here at Salmiler lifestyle we have been privileged to have a few words with Nicholas Arciniaga on his return from his first international race ,representing the US at the Ome 30k race in Japa
n ( sister race to Boston). In this race he, impressively, ended up finishing in 5th place in a pr of 1:34:25, only a few seconds behind 2 of Japan’s top aggressive marathoners. We came across this seasoned runner originally from Southern California , a few months ago and were greatly impressed by his consistent running record, and his running attitude. Actually, it was after the hype of the Boston Marathon, after having finished with a time of 2:16:13, an impressive performance which granted him a top US finisher status. However, more than any accomplishments, what is greatly admired of Nick is his determination and ambition to run, train hard and never, ever give up. Clearly, a race is never a man’s sure win. One must be prepared to accept the great and not so great results and take that as running experience, sleep it off and get up the next day; refocus and continue with the training because there is another race to be run tomorrow.

Name: Nicholas Arciniaga
Hometown: Fountain Valley, CA
Current Location: Rochester Hills, MI
High school : Fountain Valley High School
College: Cal State University, Fullerton
Career: Professional Runner.
S. When did you first begin this lifestyle of running?
NA I first started running my freshman year of high school, but it didn't really become my lifestyle until my 2nd year of college.
S:Why? NA:I joined my high school team because my friends told me I would do well at the sport and I have always had a competitive mindset towards running. Up until my 2nd year of college Running was really just a sport to me, and a way to pay for college. Then I finally hit the tipping point when I realized that I would probably run for the rest of my life, I truly enjoy the way it feels when I’m outside running myself to exhaustion.

S Who is or has been the biggest heroic inspiration for you in your running lifestyle?
NA :This is a tough question for me. There have always been runners who I have looked up to and idolized, such as Brian Sell and Ryan Hall, but it is tough for me to call them Heroes. I've known Ryan Hall since I was in High School, he has always been heads and feet ahead of everyone I knew, he is the same age as me and he is the type of runner I aspire to be. Fast, Smooth, Humble, and a down to earth great guy. Then there is Brian Sell, who I have looked up to for years now. He has a similar background to myself, not amazing in high school or college, but finally found his nitch in marathoning. Brian's work ethic and his ability to train harder and push through more pain than anyone I know. That is also the type of runner I want to be, to push myself to new limits.

S:Okay Nick, so you have been very successful in high school and college, correct? NA:I was decent in High School, but below average in College. S: Most people stop running after they start their careers and or after they settle down. Why are you still running? NA:I continue to run because it is my dream to go to the Olympics. Right now my focus is on 2012, then it will be 2016, and so on. As long as I am still able to run, and compete at a top level I will. S:Do you think you will ever stop? NA:No, it is something I can see myself doing until I'm 90-some years old.
S:Briefly take us through a week’s routine in the running lifestyle of Nick Arciniaga.
NA:That’s easy. Every morning I wake up at 6:45 or so, then go for a 10-20 mile run with my teammates. Currently I am on the Hansons-Brooks Olympic Development Program. After my run I eat, and either go to work or take a nap. I work at Hanson's Running Shop, a store owed by my coaches, Kevin and Keith Hanson. I only work part-time since my coaches want us to be more focused on our training than work. After work, or after my nap I go on a 2nd run of 4-6 miles. This run is usually pretty easy and on my own. Then I have dinner, watch some TV, and go to bed around 10. This is a typical day, everyday of the week. Once a week or so, the team will get together, go to a movie, have a card night, or go out to celebrate a birthday.
S: If running was not an option for you, what other hobby/lifestyle do you think you would be engaged in?
NA:I have always been active and competitive, so I would have probably ended up doing some endurance sport, whether it was cycling or swimming. If I was not good enough to make it a living then I would likely use my Accounting Degree in some way. Although part of me wants to say that I would have ended up living out in the wilderness somewhere, perhaps being a park ranger at some National Park in California. I have always enjoyed camping and being out in nature, surrounded by trees, animals, and not much else.

S: What has been the most gratifying moment in your life as a runner thus far?
NA:The most gratifying moment is a tie between Qualifying for the Olympic Trials in my first marathon ever(Chicago, 2006), and Finishing 10th place and 1st American at the Boston Marathon last year(2008).
S:What has been the toughest, and how did you overcome these tough times?
NA:The toughest was my freshman year of college, the entire year, where it seemed that no matter what I did, I could run as fast as I knew I was capable of, and because of that I nearly gave up the sport. By the end of the year it was a conversation that I had with my teammate that made me rethink my whole attitude that I had towards running. Basically, in order for me to succeed, I had to make running my passion, make it my life. For too long I had run, done my workouts, like they were a job, a task. Now, every run I do still has a purpose, but I make sure that it is enjoyable and beneficial in the long run.

S: How has running influenced other aspects of your life?
NA:Giving me the opportunity to travel a lot more than I would normally have been able to. The most recent of while was a race in Japan. Running has also taught me a lot about hard work, patience, time management skills, healthy eating, and how to be calm and level-headed in any kind of situation. All of these skills can be used in pretty much every aspect of my life.
S: What piece of advice can you give to others just starting out in this running lifestyle?
NA:Pretty much the same thing that my teammate told me in college, go into every run with a good attitude, that every run will be a benefit to you. Taking a negative attitude makes running seem more like a chore, nobody likes doing chores. Sooner or later you will hit the tipping point and you will begin enjoy running more than you hate it, eventually maybe even become obsessed with it.
S: What are your running goals and aspirations for the future?
NA:My Main Goal is to qualify for the Olympics. My best shot is in the marathon for either the 2012 or 2016 Olympics. My chances are realistically pretty slim, so I would be just as happy if I were to represent the US in at least one International Race, and there are a few of those opportunities each year. I would also like to travel around the world a lot more, touring as many major marathons as I can around the world.

S: What are your thoughts on salmiler lifestyle?
NA:I must admit, I'm not quite sure what the lifestyle is, however I'm pretty sure that we have the same ideals and Lifestyle.
S: How does your family and friends keep updated on you and your running? NA:My family and friends contact me pretty often. People who I ran with in high school or ran after I did e-mail me every once in a while to ask how things are going, or to congratulate me on races that they hear about. Then there are people on Facebook and Myspace who I maybe met once, or never even met before, who congratulate me, add me as their friend, or even ask for running advice.

That was one heck of an interview. We want to thank Nick Arciniaga for taking the time to share his running lifestyle with us here at the Salmiler lifestyle. There is no doubt that his running lifestyle and accomplishments will offer inspiration to others already in this lifestyle and those just beginning. We wish you the best of luck in your quest for the Olympics and all your future goals to come. Please know that here at Salmiler we support you and your goals 100%. Again, thanks Nick!!! ... here at Salmiler our lifestyle is on the run, R U?

Calling all runners and running fans,
This day has been a hot one here in Riverside Ca. ( aka the IE). A 83degree day to be exact. I just got back from an 10 miler and I can say that I definitely did feel the heat. During hot runs like this I usually will take off my shirt and tie it onto my head like a cap. This helps in two ways: one, it provides shelter from direct contact with the sun on my face and forhead, and two, it allows the breeze to cool my body down as I am running. I tend to do this toward the end of the run... So If you ever see an almost naked guy running with what looks like something wrapped around its head, don't fear...its only me :)

After a few weeks in the making here we have just wrapped up our first interview in this new series, “Salmiler on the run with:” . In this first feature interview here at Salmiler lifestyle, we go on a run with one of the most humble and down to earth runners we have met, Nicholas Arciniaga (see photo above). For the record, the runners that we feature will have been selected because we feel that they are living the core value of this running lifestyle. These athletes are living their lives on the run, and their accomplishments, ambitions and current running offers inspiration for others to learn and grow in this running lifestyle. Feel free to offer your suggestions as to how we can improve coverage of the athletes that we have chosen to highlight on this running lifestyle blog. Thank you and we hope you enjoy our interview with Nick Arciniaga which shall be up soon.... so stay tuned!!! Living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

calling all runners and running fans,
Today I woke up after having slept a nice and well rested 8 eight hours. It is recommended that we sleep 6 to 8 hours... I always choose the higher end :). Experts say that people that sleep less than four hour or more than 8 tend to live shorter lives...scarry. With my running I know I need my sleep so I try to get as much of it as often as possible. However, If I wasn't as active as I am I don't think I'd want to sleep as much as I do. I am a firm believer that sleep is a waste of presious time. There are sooo many other things I could be doing than sleeping.
Today I went out for a nice 10 mile run. The weather was perfect; nice and sunny, but not hot. I didn't sub, so I slept in and decided to hit the trails. Having run today only means one thing...I have a free day for this weekend...or should I run six days this week :)? We'll just have to see what comes up this weekend....living our lifestyle on the run, R U?

Coty Gonzales Reviews the Salmiler Brand
miles: 6 mile temp run...........dirt.......................sunny.
something to think about:" A race is a work of art that people can look at and be affected in as many ways they're capable of understanding."
- Steve Prefontaine
Calling all runners and running fans,
Today I ran a shorter and faster pace run or better known as a tempo run, usually about 75% of my race pace. This allows me to work on my speed and get out of the base routine. My next marathon is not for a few more months so I have plenty of time to put in a few more before then.
Below is a video review of the Salmiler brand by Coty Gonzales from Hawaii. He runs the Cotygonzales blog , where he blogs daily, and covers all relevant news about the broad tshirt/apparel industry ( more specifically about the indie tshirt and design industry). I have been following him for a few months now and have been really impressed on how he covers the brands that he chooses to introduce to the industry. I gotta say, I really enjoy his overall coverage style. He shows such enthusiam, and passion about the brands that it just makes you want to find out more about about them. KUDOS to Coty for such an awesome job!!! Reflection....Vegas Time!!!
miles run: 12miles............dirt/asphalt...................overcast/cool(perfect weather I'd say)
something to think about: "When you put yourself on the line in a race and expose yourself to the unknown, you learn things about yourself that are very exciting." - Doris Brown Heritage
Calling all runners and running fans:
Today I decided to do a long run given that it seemed like the perfect day and I sure wasn't disappointed. The total run was approx. 12 miles and took me about 1hour and 40 minutes. The weather was not cold but not warm either, I'd say it was perfect. During this run I reflected on my life; where I have come from and where it is that I am going. Its always a good idea to do a reflection on your life and see what is it that you are doing, and if you are doing things right or not. Don't be afraid to realize that you are not on the right path. Instead, know that you can at any time modify and/or change your path. After all it is the path you will have to travel on and live on for quite some time. I have to say that thus far I feel that I have made the right choices and that I am in a fulfilled state of mind. Not to say that I am completely fulfilled, but that at the present time I am happy with where I stand in my path:)
Its official, we are heading to Vegas this Spring 2009. I just confirmed the reservation of the timeshare for March 13th through March 16th. We are staying at the brand new Bluegreen Club 36 in Las Vegas. Its centrally located on Flamingo Street, just across from the MGM Grand. This will be the first time staying at this timeshare and should be fun. We have a weekend long of activities planned. Las Vegas has always been my favorite destination all for not the reasons you would imagine. As some of you know I don't gamble, drink or smoke, never have never will. Then, why would I like Vegas so much you ask? Well, I truly enjoy the architectural design of the hotels and casinos. Every time I go there, I find a completely new architecturally designed hotel and that to me is very exciting. I also enjoy the the dinning and the all night life. I mean, come on who really sleeps in Las Vegas, I don't !!! Below are some photos of Club 36 and other architectural representations of Las Vegas. Enjoy....living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

Off schedule...New Designs
miles run: 0 miles today...its my day off!!!

calling all runners and running fans:
Today was my second day off from running for this week. This only means one thing.....I don't have any more days off for the week :). I had to open the restaurant today, which I don't enjoy too much because of my running. I dislike running in the dark and usually by the time I get home when I open, its close to getting dark and cold. I should be back to my normal schedule next week. Tomorrow I will open also but should be getting out a bit earlier to get some miles in. On Sunday I am off and should be pulling in a 14 miler. Where should I run this time? Any ideas?

I just sent in the guidelines to the designer for the next set of tees. These designs should be a little more complex and artsy. I am also in the process of getting two other designs printed ( see the designs above). These two designs I have had for a few weeks now and after changes here and there, I think I am finally convinced with the final outcome. Stay tuned for more salmiler apparel coming out soon.....living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

something to think about: "Running hills breaks up your rhythm and forces your muscles to adapt to different stresses. The result? You become a stronger runner." - Eamonn Coughlin
Calling all runners and running fans,
Today and tomorrow are my days off from work and decided to run hills, so I did. I went up this really nice neighborhood over here by my parents called Lake Hills Reserve. I really enjoy going up there, especially at night when you can see the whole city of Riverside and beyond and all of Corona on the other side. A truly spectacular place up high to show and impress that special someone :) It was a slow run given that it was uphill but felt good, especially towards the end. Hills always kick my butt...and today was no exception. Yesterday I had to run indoors around my house for an hour cause it started to rain right as I was heading out. It was fun and different, yet I am sure a little weird Charly, who would not stop following me around for the entire hour. Ironically, I think I must have ran it hard cause I was sore this morning :(
I'll be heading over to Los Angeles for the rest of the day. Will be going out for dinner at this great Italian Restaurant out there called Maria's Italian Kitchen ( click on the link above to check it out online).....gotta replenish my body from those killer hills with some tasty, homemade carbs Italian Style....Living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

Movie Taken/Prize Money for the LA Marathon
miles run: day off due to the rain :(....................
something to think about: "If a man coaches himself, then he has only himself to blame when he is beaten." - Sir Roger Bannister
Calling all runners and running fans:
This morning I woke up to a rainy day here in the IE and decided to use up one of my days off from running. I much rather use them up on my days off from work but I'm sure by now we all know how much I like running in the rain....Last night I got off from work early and took my sister out to see the movie " Taken" with Liam Neeson (click above on post title to see trailer). I was told it was action packed from beginning to end and I sure wasn't disappointed. Its truly inspiring to see what a father is willing to overcome to save his daughters life. I will not say much more other than you gotta see it if you are looking for a great action movie that will keep you on your tipy toes throughout. My sister who originally wanted to see Friday 13, was very impressed as well. This movie was a great treat after a long busy Valentine's weekend at the restaurant. We were extremely busy all weekend and the best part was that it was all smooth as can be.
The following is an article on the Prize money for the LA marathon. Man I wish I was fast enough to win!!! Can You imagine, male or female can take a complete package worth 150k plus all other endorsements that follow such victories...that's crazy money in a mere 2 hours and 10 min. Read the article below to see all the details and break down of the prize money. All I can say is that Honda must really be benefiting from their sponsorship of this race for they have been doing it for some time and will not give it up. I wonder, how many people buy a Honda automobile after they see the Honda attachment on the LA marathon? I am really stoked about this race happening May 25th 2009, which is on a Monday. This year I plan to take the whole weekend off and spend it in LA, get a nice hotel room and be well rested for the race. Don't want to sleep in my car at a Ralphs parking lot any time soon again.....Lifestyle on the run, R U ?
The following is the official Article released Feb 4th by the LA Marathon Association.
"LOS ANGELES MARATHON ANNOUNCES PRIZE PURSE, BONUSES FOR ELITE RUNNERS
$100,000 “Challenge Bonus” Tops List of Awards
LOS ANGELES, Calif.— The Los Angeles Marathon, which pioneered the “challenge bonus” among bigcity
marathons, has announced its prize purse and bonus structure for the May 25, 2009 race. In
addition to awards for the top five male and top five female runners, there are time‐based bonuses and
the “challenge bonus” – which goes to the first runner, male or female, across the finish line.
The top male finisher and the top female finisher will each win $20,000 in cash prize money, along with
a 2009 Honda Accord Sedan EX‐L V6 (MSRP $28,705), for a total winning prize value of nearly $50,000.
Second place male and female finishers are each awarded $12,500 in cash, while third through fifth
places are worth $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500, respectively.
The $100,000 challenge bonus is, among big‐city U.S. marathons, a concept unique to the LA Marathon.
The challenge bonus gives elite runners, male and female, another opportunity to win significant cash
prize money. Here’s how it works: The female elite runners will begin the race prior to the male elite
runners, according to a time differential that will be determined just prior to race day. The intent will be
to give both male and female runners an equal chance to finish the race first. On race day, the first
runner – male or female – to cross the finish line – will win an additional $100,000.
“The Challenge Bonus provides an added dimension to our race, and gives elite runners another way to
earn significant prize money,” said Los Angeles Marathon President Russ Pillar. “We look forward to
attracting an elite field of runners for the 2009 LA Marathon – and beyond.”
In addition to the above awards, top runners can win as much as $75,000 each for running exceptionally
fast times. A male runner who completes the race in under 2 hours, 7 minutes and 30 seconds will win a
bonus of $75,000 – as will any female runner who finishes under 2:20:00. Time bonuses will be given for
male runners finishing under 2:12:00 and female runners under 2:30:00, and are not limited in number.
Thus, if a large number of male and female runners finish under the appointed times, all will be eligible
for bonus money. A detailed breakdown is attached.
The course for this year’s race is the popular 2005‐2006 loop course, which starts and finishes
downtown. The event records were set on this very course in 2006 ‐‐ 2:08:40 was the top men’s time,
and 2:25:10 was the time of the top female runner. A field of elite runners is expected to compete this
year for all three categories of prize money."

Happy Valentine's Day.......
miles run: 8 miles run.......mud/ grass/dirt.....................................sunny, very sunny and nice
something to think about: "Those who do something and fail are infinitetly better then those who try to do nothing and succeed." - Lloyd Jones
Calling all runners and running fans,
We have been surprised with a really nice day today on this very special Valentine's Day. Today I got up a round 10 am and went out for a nice relaxing run at the usual spot. I ran about 8 miles through some muddy trails that made the run more of an obstacle course....This brings back memories of the best Cross Country race that i ran back in high school. It was the Brea Invitational in Brea, Ca. We had to run through grass, dirt, mud and even cross a small river... which was amazingly awesome!!! I ended up leading the race the whole way until the very end when this other Mexican guy passed me and took it to the finish line. Second place was fine for me, it was the obstacle like course experience that made it all worth while for me. Anyways, so now I am getting ready to go to work. It should be a busy night given that its Valentine's day. Its always funny to see the first time dates come in for dinner. You can see/feel awkwardness all around throughout the entire meal. My question is how many of these couples will make it past their initial dinner date? Lets see if I can spot a few first timers tonight.....living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

Friday morning start.....
miles run: day off from running today.....
something to run: "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars"
- Les Brown
calling all runners and running fans,
Today is one of my two days off from running. I just woke up this morning to start on my day and managed to get a substitute job. I subbing for middle school science. It shouldn't be bad; this school is a regular now. After some time, you learn your way around and find yourself only going to schools that give you less headaches. I take advantage of these subbing days by working on the brand promos during my down times. This is why I usually try to work HS or middle school. You get the same pay but you get a prep period, which you don't get in elementary school. Its great to get paid to work on your own stuff......
As mentioned before, I have some codes for those interested in purchasing from salmiler apparel. Feel free to use the code "ontherunru" to receive a 20% discount off total purchase. It always helps to get a little incentive right, well, there you go. Just keep this code in mind for future purchases as well. There is a lot more to come in the near future. This is only the beginning....I have other designs coming shortly so stay tuned.....Living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?

Slow medium long run.....
miles run: 12 mile base run.............dirt/mud.................sunny/cold...very cold
something to think about: "If you can't win, make the fellow ahead of you break the record." -Unknown
Calling all runners and running fans:
Today I went out for a slow medium long run considering that I was off and the weather was perfect....well, at least at the start of the run. I started my day at around 10 am. I had gotten up at 620am to call sub finder to try and get a sub job but no luck....In this downturn economy we all suffer... even subs. Having nothing to do that early, I decided to go back to sleep for a couple of hours. When I finally got up I did my usual online routine and then headed out to get my car washed. It was a nice sunny day with a cool breeze so I expected the place to be packed. To my surprise, there were only two or three cars. Apparently rain is expected in the next few days so whats the point in washing your car right? Well, I guess that doesn't matter to me, since I got the VIP pass and can get a car was everyday if I had nothing better to do.
After the car wash, my brother Elio offered to teach me how to drive manual. He's got an almost brand new 350 Z that he got a year ago and since then, he's only put 1k in miles. I guess it does help to live a mile away from work, ah? Its to my advantage that I learn manual. After all, my BMW will probably hit the 50k mark by the end of this year and I will either have to renew the maintenance plan or pay maintenance as I go. This way I can drive his car, save some mileage and prolong the maintenance plan of my car ( this is only about me right...?)..... oh yeah, and my bro can drive my BMW :) Enough, so to the point now. I ended up getting some practice after enough jabber from my brother who, so patiently, tried to explain the steps to stupid me.... I just don't get it. Why can't I understand such simple steps. I think things too much and over complicate everything....can anyone relate? Elio said I was doing fine to start, but then I started losing it. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? Let me just add that the car didn't sound too good while i was driving...maybe it didn't like me? I will continue practicing until I get it.
After we got home, I got ready to go out to my usual running spot. I parked my car and started warming up. I stretched for almost 15 minutes and did my usual abdominal straightening exercises. The weather was nice at first. The time was about 420pm. I could see other runners also getting their miles in close and faraway. After the sun went down, it started getting cold... very cold. While crossing a street I saw a friend driving by, I waved and she waved and smiled back. I think she was trying to say something but I didn't quite hear. I guess It will come back if it was really that important. After about an hour of running, it started getting dark. I tend to slow down and get in cautious mode to avoid a sudden slip and falls. Throughout the run I kept on reminiscing to my running years behind. In particular to the music that i was listening to during my high school running days. I started thinking about Blink 182 and their song, " what's my age again" all triggered, I think, by the announcement at the Grammies that they are back together in the summer of 2009. How cool is that!!! One of the coolest bands every is back!!! The song mentioned, earlier as well as "the small things" brings back memories since those were my two favorite songs during those days. I clearly remember hearing them at cross country invitationals everywhere. The video of one of these songs is that of the three members running naked acting like goofballs throughout the entire video. This got me thinking what guts to run around NAKAD....could that be my next challenge? :) lol......tan tan tan!!!! Living our lifestyle on the run, R U ?
